About Building A Second Brain

“Building A Second Brain” by Tiago Forte is a book that teaches us to maximize the potential of our ideas. Have you ever tried to remember something important and felt it slip through your fingers, or had a great idea fade from your mind before you could capture it? We live in an era of information overload. As per a New York Times Report, every day, the average person consumes the equivalent of 34 gigabytes of information—that’s like 174 newspapers worth of new ideas.

But honestly, do any of these ideas significantly impact our lives? We forget almost all of this information and quickly move on to the next thing. Sure, we sometimes bookmark stuff, but we rarely revisit it or can’t retrieve it when needed. This book teaches us how to set up a system to organize the vast majority of information we consume and make it available when we actually need it in the future.

Tiago Forte is one of the leading voices in the Personal Knowledge Management (PKM) movement. For the past many years, he has taught thousands of people how to implement PKM through his course “Building a Second Brain.” This method is one of—if not the—most formalized approaches to implementing PKM into our lives. On June 14, 2022, Tiago released his “Building a Second Brain” book, which shows readers how to build their own second brain. This book can be a life-changer for anyone, regardless of their profession.

Why Read Building A Second Brain?

This book, “Building A Second Brain,” is changing my life. Around the middle of last month, I was nearing completion of this blog. When I showed a preview of this site to a few close friends, most of them asked one common question: “How do you find time to build something like this yourself despite your hospital schedule?” My answer? I had built my Second Brain! It had unloaded my primary brain.

I’ve been thinking about having a Books Blog for years. I used to get ideas, but they would vanish in the flow of life, never materializing. Then I came across Tiago Forte and his book “Building A Second Brain” on YouTube. The concept really appealed to me, so I read the book. After reading, I created my Second Brain and started organizing my ideas as taught in the book.

I kept storing and organizing every small bit of ideas related to a Books Blog. I made sure to input my ideas into my Second Brain as soon as I got them. Despite being busy with work during this time, because of this small habit and the Second Brain system, I had all the information needed for building this blog neatly organized on my devices. The final execution was effortless.

As this book tells us, a new idea always generates from a permutation and combination of old ideas. And new ideas can generate at any time—they can be internal, originating inside your mind, or external, from the information you consume. This book beautifully teaches us to CODE (Collect, Organize, Distill, and Execute) these ideas.

Reading Insights

When I recommended this book to a friend, he dismissed it, saying he didn’t like self-help books. But let me be clear: this isn’t self-help. It’s a productivity book. This system has the potential to boost your productivity many times over. The book took me about five and a half to six hours to read. The language is simple and fluid; you hardly need to refer to a dictionary. It teaches us how to handle the information we consume, step by step. The author has included many productivity hacks from celebrities, which inspire and entertain us while we learn the methods. I highly recommend this book and building your own Second Brain, regardless of your profession or stage in life!
